Neunerspitze – Messner direttissima

Friction slabs, water runnels and Messner history – a day tour thanks to driving access to the Lavarella hut.

The Neunerspitze belongs in every climbing logbook – made famous by Reinhold Messner’s bold routes. This fantastic limestone face, carved by hundreds of water runnels, is unique both in its beauty and its style of climbing.

On the direttissima the lower part is mostly superb friction climbing, higher up corner climbing takes over. Protection is sparse but the belays are always good – and by now I know almost every one of the few pegs. The Heidi route is a fine alternative.

The big advantage: as a local guide I may drive up to the Lavarella hut, which turns this climb into a relaxed day tour.
