Cortina d’Ampezzo

Tofana di Rozes – south face

An 800-metre labyrinth above Cortina – from the 1901 Dimai route to the Costantini-Apollonio and its infamous ‘donkey’s back’.

The superb rock of the Tofana south face makes every climber’s heart beat faster – many brilliant lines run through it. One of the finest was first climbed back in 1901 by the guides Dimai and Siorpaes with the baronesses Ilona and Rolanda von Eötvös, found with great intuition through an 800-metre labyrinth of a face. If you master grade IV/V, a real adventure awaits – not far from glamorous Cortina.

Those at home on grade VI and some technical climbing will enjoy the face’s probably most famous route: the Costantini-Apollonio of 1944, known for its two roofs and the notorious ‘donkey’s back’ that has frightened many a climber.
