At 4,049 metres, Piz Bernina is not only the highest but the only 4,000-metre peak in the Eastern Alps. Superb mixed terrain and the striking snow crest of the Biancograt make it a dream mountain. The Biancograt is also known as the ‘stairway to heaven’ and is surely one of the most beautiful ridges in the Alps.
A classic high-alpine tour requiring good fitness, technique, sure-footedness and excellent weather and conditions – especially for the traverse from the Swiss to the Italian summit. Combined with the traverse of Piz Palü via the Fortezza ridge, it makes for three dream days.
